Get to know Urologist Dr. Jason S. Lai, who serves patients in Whittier, California.

Dr. Lai, a well-respected urologist, takes a holistic approach to patient care, believing that healing should encompass more than physical health and that “deep emotional and spiritual issues” often cause “physical manifestations.” He considers it a privilege to be a part of patients’ lives, expressing that “there’s nothing like seeing a patient come in for a kidney stone, removing it the same day, and seeing instant relief.”

At present, he sees patients at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, which is a state-of-the-art facility in Whittier, California with 548 licensed beds. The mission of the hospital is to provide high-quality healthcare, without discrimination, and contribute to the health and well-being of its communities in an ethical, safe, and fiscally prudent manner, in recognition of its charitable purpose.

In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Lai obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He then went on to serve his residency in urology at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.

Originally from Houston, Dr. Lai concedes “I love to eat” and never passes up a chance to try a new restaurant. An avid reader, he enjoys biking, camping, and doing “basically anything outdoors” with his two active children. He also gives to the Boys and Girls Club of Whittier and volunteers with global humanitarian relief organizations.

In addition to English, he is fluent in Chinese and Taiwanese.
