Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Lucena graduated with his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines  . He was an American Citizen and relocated back  to the United States and completed   his residency in internal medicine at  Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 1991. He was both the Intern of the year and the Resident of the year.
