Get to know Interventional Radiologist Dr. Stephen J. Hunt, who serves patients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hunt is a dual board-certified interventional radiologist whose areas of clinical expertise include lung cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, metastatic disease, interventional oncology, oncology, cancer, ablation, cryoablation, microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, immunotherapy, radioembolization, and chemoembolization.

A Penn Medicine physician, he serves as Co-Director of Penn Image-Guided Interventions (PIGI) and as a Laboratory Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Seeing patients ages 18 and up, Dr. Hunt has hospital privileges at Chester County Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Pennsylvania Hospital. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, and is an Investigator at the Penn Institute for Immunology.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Hunt graduated with his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. He then went on to perform his residencies at Kaiser Foundation Hospital and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he also continued his fellowship training. 

Subsequent to his education, he attained board certification in diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology through the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

In affiliation with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Hunt is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Medical Association, the Association of Health Care Journalists, the Cancer Research Institute, the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Philadelphia Angiographic and Interventional Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Interventional Oncology, the Society of Interventional Radiology, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.

The doctor’s research expertise includes immuno-oncology, interventional oncology, cancer, cancer biology, immunotherapy, cell biology, cell physiology, animal models, translational research, vascular disease, health policy, health economics, GIS, artificial intelligence, ultrasound, AVUS, embolization, ablation, and abscopal effect.

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that performs various minimally-invasive procedures using medical imaging guidance, such as x-ray fluoroscopy, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or ultrasound. Interventional radiologists diagnose and treat disease. They treat a wide range of conditions in the body by inserting various small tools, such as catheters or wires from outside the body. X-ray and imaging techniques such as CT and ultrasound help guide the radiologist.
