Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Santiago Villarreal, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

Specializing in the care and treatment of the kidneys, Dr. Villarreal is a thriving nephrologist with Southwest Texas Nephrology in San Antonio, Texas. 

In practice since 1984, he is also affiliated with several hospitals and medical centers throughout the state of Texas, including Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, Baptist Medical Center, Methodist Hospital, Southwest General Hospital, St Luke’s Baptist Hospital, and Methodist Mansfield Medical Center.

Following the completion of his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 1977, Dr. Villarreal went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. 

With an unwavering commitment to his profession, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. Moreover, he is the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2015, 2016) and the Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2015).

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
