Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Anand M. Kuruvilla, who serves patients in Florida.
With a passion for his profession, Dr. Kuruvilla is a board- certified radiation oncologist who specializes in treating a wide variety of adult cancers with radiation.
Dr. Kuruvilla started at the Cancer Center of Putnam in 1991, the year the facility was opened, as the Director of Radiation Oncology. Today, he is proud that the center has become a full-fledged cancer facility, acknowledged by its peers in NE Florida as second to none. He has served Putnam County for the past three decades.
A man of many titles, Dr. Kuruvilla is the President of the Putnam Florida Radiation Oncology Group, LLC, and Kuruvilla Oncology, LLC. In 2017, he joined with the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and the Integrated Oncology Network LLC (ION) to form a joint venture, the Putnam Radiation Oncology JV. This joint venture has invested significant capital to make the facility, the Cancer Center of Putnam, and its equipment state-of-the-art.
The Cancer Center of Putnam was awarded Apex Certification in January of 2021, only the fifth facility in Florida to have attained this prestigious award by the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO).
After completing his undergraduate studies in India, Dr. Kuruvilla spent two and half years in England, where he commenced post-grad oncology training until he immigrated to the United States in 1982. He spent four years at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, earning an American post-grad degree in radiation oncology. He was the chief resident during his final year.
After attaining his board certification in therapeutic radiology, conferred by the American Board of Radiology in 1986, Dr. Kuruvilla was a consultant radiation oncologist and subsequently a partner with Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, California, the largest HMO in the United States.
Dr Kuruvilla is often referred patients with a suspected or new cancer diagnosis. He evaluates and expedites appropriate imaging and required workup to confirm the diagnosis, determine the extent of the disease, and expedite sub-specialist involvement. Treatment is recommended following multidisciplinary input and may involve surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
Dr Kuruvilla is known to spend inordinate time with his patients and their family members. He translates medical terminology, explains risks and rewards, anticipated side effects and prognosis to and help patients and their loved ones decide the pros and cons of accepting treatment vs. palliative Hospice care..
With an exemplary reputation amongst his peers and the community for his unique ability to see and care for patients in record time, Dr. Kuruvilla expedites the above processes in multiple ways based on his decades of experience.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology (FACRO), he is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties in cancer treatment, the other two being Surgery and Medical Oncology.
Among his philanthropic endeavors, Dr. Kuruvilla helped create the Putnam First Cancer Fund, (www.putnamfirstcf.org) and is long term member of the Rotary Club of Palatka.
