Get to know Pain Management Specialist Dr. Mark Matsunaga, who serves patients in Columbia, Maryland.

Dr. Matsunaga, a top pain management specialist, is the Founding Director of the Comprehensive Pain Center with two offices in Columbia, Maryland.

Comprehensive Pain Center is a medical practice specializing in pain management and anesthesia. Medication management, interventional procedures, and conservative modalities are offered at the practice, with patient care always being the primary focus. It is the mission of the Comprehensive Pain Center to manage pain in a compassionate, coordinated, multidisciplinary setting, to restore the highest level of function and quality of life. 

Back in 1986, Dr. Matsunaga earned his medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. Years later, in 1991, he performed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. 

With three decades dedicated to medicine, the doctor is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology, whose mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. He also holds a certificate in Human Participants Protection Education for Research Teams sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and in the Radiation Management Credentialing Test from Howard County General Hospital.

Bringing a wealth of knowledge to his industry, Dr. Matsunaga is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management, as well as a member of the American Society of Anesthesia, the American Society of Pain Management, the American Pain Society, the North American Neuromodulation Society, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association, the Maryland-DC Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia.

Pain management is a branch of medicine employing an interdisciplinary approach for easing the suffering and improving the quality of life of those living with chronic pain. A pain management specialist is a doctor who specializes in pain medicine, focusing on the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of pain.
