Get to know Pulmonologist Dr. Essam Mekhaiel, who serves patients in Illinois. 

Dr. Mekhaiel is a triple board-certified pulmonologist whose clinical interests include interventional pulmonology and bronchial thermoplasty. 

In collaboration with Advocate Health Care, he is the Director of Interventional Pulmonology at Advocate Christ Medical Center & an attending physician at Advocate South Suburban Hospital.

A 2005 graduate of the University of Saint Eustatius School of Medicine, Dr. Mekhaiel went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Advocate Christ Medical Center in 2008. He then furthered his training with a fellowship in pulmonary disease at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in 2011, a fellowship in critical care medicine at Mayo Clinic in 2012, and a fellowship in pulmonary disease at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2014.

Board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonology disease, and critical care medicine, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Pulmonology is a medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. A pulmonologist is an internal medicine physician who specializes in preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions and diseases that affect the lungs, bronchial tubes, and the respiratory system, including the nose, pharynx, and throat.

Honoring his expertise, Dr. Mekhaiel has been the recipient of an On-Time Doctor Award (2018).

On a more personal note, he is fluent in English and Arabic.
