Pain From The Flu Vaccine?
Pain especially muscular aches are normal after the flu shot. This is your immune system turning on. Your body is preparing to fight it feels similar though usually not as bad as getting the actual flu infection, and of course, without the risks of infection no risks for pneumonia no risk for death. The good news too is usually only lasts for hours, not days. No need to go to the doctor try some Tylenol or Motrin. If you have recently been exposed to sick individuals, you may have contracted the flu or Covid before the shot can do its job. So if symptoms last more than 2436 hours or you begin to have cough or shortness of breath, you may have gotten the flu before you got the shot, and the shot will not help and you may need intervention. Flu shots take 14 days to prevent serious flu symptoms and do not take effect immediately! READ MORE
If I have a severe allergic reaction to food, what are the immediate emergency treatments given in the ER?
There are many different types of food allergies each mediated by a different immunologic response. So it really depends on which immunologic response youre having. Some may cause nothing more than nausea and vomiting and supportive care is appropriate for these as well as avoidance of the offending agent if you have more like an anaphylactic reaction. With that one has hives rash shortness of breath wheezing and potentially your throat is closing. This is more serious with both airway protection potentially even a tube to breathe for you is important first step. You may require shots of as well epinephrine which does a good job of decreasing local swelling for short periods of time as well as IV steroids which do the job over longer periods and different body immunological reactions READ MORE
What is the treatment for endocarditis?
The typical treatment for endocarditis is to be sure that your valves are OK so evaluation to make sure that they havent been damaged and dont need to be replaced. Next making sure that the source of the endocarditis has been discontinued whether thats a skin infection or IV drug abuse we have to stop the source of the bacteria. There are of course autoimmune types of inflammation of the heart but thats not typically endocarditis although it can be. Finally if its bacterial which most endocarditis is, then at least six weeks of IV antibiotics are usually recommended sometimes more. Your specific circumstances of course should be discussed with your doctor. Good luck and good health, Dr. CK READ MORE
Is rhinoplasty recovery painful?
There is a fair amount of facial pain, nose bridge pain, and sometimes tooth pain that follows a rhinoplasty or nose job. And it really depends on how much they have to do how much tissue theyre pushing and pulling. I think that certainly if septoplasty or you need repair of deviated septum, that increases the amount of pain. A simple shaving may have less pain involved than when the architecture inside gets moved around. The other uncomfortable part of the nose job, are the splints that are left in for about a week following the procedure they are inert made of silicone are very safe and actually come out fairly smoothly, and they are large. The large object inside your nose may cause a fair amount of discomfort. That being said, I have two close family members who have had this recently and both needed serious pain medicines only for one dose afterwards, and tolerated it quite well with Tylenol and Motrin. Of course everyones different and you should talk to your doctor about your potential circumstances. Good luck and good health. Dr. CK READ MORE
Is there a smaller, better version of the CPAP?
There are many alternate mask types such as nasal pillows and nasal prong masks. There are also many settings that can be used that makes it more comfortable and tolerable. Weight loss is also a powerful additional treatment to decrease sleep apnea. Also, non-CPAP options, such as oral appliances, positional therapy, and newer devices like nasal EPAP or negative pressure mouthpieces, may be considered for those unable to tolerate any PAP therapy, though their efficacy is generally lower than standard CPAP. Most importantly, Having a relationship and talking through these struggles with your physician can get you to the answer you need to tailor your care for success. READ MORE
