Get to know Hospitalist Dr. David Michael Vandenberg, who serves patients in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
A physician with over 30 years of experience in both clinical practice and medical education in the fields of internal medicine and hospital medicine, Dr. Vandenberg is the Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of the IHA Hospital Medicine ACE Unit at St. Joseph Ann Arbor.
In addition to seeing patients at St. Joseph Ann Arbor, he serves as the Medical Director of the Eastern Michigan University Physician Assistant Program since its inception in October, 2012. He has previously held the position of chief of staff and Medical Director at Select Specialty Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Vandenberg has directed multiple hospitalist programs, and was among the first to integrate a Physician Assistant model into hospital-based care. An ardent supporter of health care education, he has held numerous clinical faculty positions with multiple PA programs and medical schools.
Back in the early days of his academic career, he graduated with his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at the Wayne State University Detroit Medical Center.
Recognized as a Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SFHM), the doctor is board-certified in hospital medicine and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists in some countries as a branch of internal or family medicine, dealing with the care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. The primary focus is caring for hospitalized patients and co-management with other specialties. Hospitalists take an active part in medical care and ensure a safe discharge for the patients they take care of.
