Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Robert V. Vallar, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

Being a board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, Dr. Vallar is a part of the team at Retina Consultants, PA II with offices throughout the state of New Jersey, including Ridgewood, Belleville, Montclair, and Jersey City. 

Retina Consultants, PA II is a renowned retina practice committed to excellence in the medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases. The retina specialists working there are certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, have completed advanced subspecialty training in diseases and surgery of retina, macula, and vitreous, and are members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. In addition to providing the highest quality care with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic technology, they offer a compassionate, friendly, and personalized environment to ensure that each patient’s visit is as pleasant as it is informative.

The doctor’s hospital affiliations include The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood & Clara Maass Hospital in Belleville. At The Valley Hospital, Dr. Vallar serves as the Director of Ophthalmology. He has had teaching appointments and has given lectures and presentations on the subject of vitreoretinal diseases and surgery.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Vallar earned his medical degree from the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in New York City, New York in 1985. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Nassau County Medical Center in 1989, where he served as chief resident. He then went on to complete his fellowship in retina-vitreous diseases and surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in 1996. 

Following his training, he became board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, whose mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning. He also holds membership status with the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery. 

In addition to English, Dr. Vallar speaks French and Italian.
