Get to know General and Breast Oncology Surgeon Dr. Taghreed Almahmeed, who serves patients in Dubai.

Dr. Almahmeed is a general and breast oncology surgeon at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai – Cancer Center in the United Arab Emirates. Her major interest is minimally invasive surgery and breast surgery, including benign and malignant diseases, as well as bariatric surgery.

Al Zahra Hospital Dubai has a capacity of 187 beds with state-of-the-art facilities. The hospital serves patients with a broad range of individual health services and believes in providing personalized service with the focus on clinical outcome through evidence-based medicine approach.

Back in 1990, Dr. Almahmeed graduated with her medical degree from the College of Medicine & Medical Science at Arabian Gulf University. She then went on to complete a fellowship in breast oncology at Michigan Breast Specialists, Van Elslander Cancer Center, St. John Hospital; a fellowship in advanced gastrointestinal laparoscopic & bariatric surgery at St. John Hospital in Michigan; a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic & bariatric surgery at Tampa General Hospital in Florida; and a research fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Specializing in surgical procedures, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Achieving fellowship status, Dr. Almahmeed is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).

Additionally, she is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care. 

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology; it focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer. 

Throughout her line of work, Dr. Almahmeed has been involved in numerous research activities and has published in several peer-reviewed journals
