Dr. James M. Van Ess is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon practicing at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  Dr. Van Ess has both a medical degree (MD) from the Mayo School of Medicine as well as a dental degree (DDS) from Marquette University.  He specializes in the surgical treatment of problems related to the mouth, jaws, and face. As an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Van Ess is a unique dental/medical specialist who can provide surgical treatment and correction of skeletally malaligned jaws and bites.  In fact, his forte and interest is in corrective orthognathic jaw surgery on individuals with underlying malocclusions due to these skeletal jaw discrepancies.  Similarly he will routinely perform jaw surgery on patient's with underlying obstructive sleep apnea, to improve airway issues.  He surgically treats individuals suffering facial, dental, and jaw trauma.  He also has an extensive dental implant and reconstructive outpatient practice, where he can provide IV sedation and/or local anesthesia to patients. These medical doctors are one of the few medical care specialists who can also administer anesthesia, besides anesthesiologists.  Typical procedures performed by Dr. Van Ess outside the hospital operating room and in the outpatient practice, besides dental implants, include tooth extractions(especially wisdom teeth) and numerous surgical procedures related to the dentition and oral cavity.  These types of surgeons also deal with conditions of various oral, dental,  mouth, and jaw pathology including cancers and underlying TMJ issues.
