Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Naushad Zafar, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

The recipient of the 2020 San Antonio Top Doctor Award, Dr. Zafar has been part of the medical community for over twenty years, specializing in dialysis and nephrology. 

He has a passion for healing and goes above and beyond to help each of the patients he sees at South Texas Renal Care Group. He serves as the Medical Director at 3 renal dialysis clinics in San Antonio, Lytle and Hondo, ensuring that patients throughout South Texas have access to specialized nephrology care.

South Texas Renal Care Group is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of kidney disease patients throughout San Antonio and South Texas. The team is composed of board certified physicians in internal medicine and nephrology who provide comprehensive treatment for hypertension, diabetic and non-diabetic kidney disease, and renal transplantation services. Patients have access to both outpatient and inpatient dialysis services, and the physicians provide quality vascular access management to ensure that dialysis treatments are highly effective and efficient.

Intrigued by how the human body worked and how to heal it when it malfunctioned, Dr. Zafar graduated with his medical degree from Sindh Medical College in Pakistan in 1986. Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to serve his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in nephrology at the State University of New York.

A member of the American Society of Nephrology, he is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, Dr. Zafar is affiliated with Methodist Hospital, Medina Regional Hospital, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant, St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels, CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Beeville, and Kindred Hospital San Antonio.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.
