  • Can changes in weather cause chest pain?

Yes, a number of possibilities: the joints where the ribs join the breast bone can swell up and cause arthritic pain; the cold can cause arteries to constrict making it difficult for blood to flow either by making it hard for the heart to pump blood or by constricting the nutrient arteries. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Can COVID cause sinus tachycardia?

The simple answer is yes. One of the complications of Covid-19 is myocarditis, which is inflammation of the heart muscle. The heart is unable to contract strongly to produce a good outflow. The heart tries to compensate by beating fast (tachycardia). Good luck. READ MORE

  • Should I go to the hospital for tachycardia?

You do not have to go to the hospital for tachycardia just by itself, but the chest tightness worries me. It may the beginning of a heart attack. Call your cardiologist or go to the emergency room. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Which beta-blocker is preferred for heart arrhythmias?

Depends on what agrees with the patient, but Metoprolol and Bisoprolol are commonly used. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Can medicine remove a blockage in your heart?

A combination of actions can make the plaque stable. For example, cholesterol lowering drugs, anti platelets drugs; control of diabetes and hypertension, correct diets and, of course, exercise will prevent the plaque from getting worse. We really don’t have a medication that dissolves plaque per se. READ MORE

  • Which is the most difficult heart valve to replace?

Probably the mitral valve because of its posterior location, but there are approaches to make it easy. READ MORE

  • How long can you live with a bad heart valve?

I don’t think there is an answer to that question because you can live for a long time with medications and valve repair or replacement. There is good care out there. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Can a 40 year old have congestive heart failure?

Yes, you can have congestive heart failure at any age. If there is damage to any part of the the heart that makes it function properly. For example, heart valves may be damaged from different types of infections; the arteries that carry oxygen and nutrients may be blocked; the major arteries that carry blood from the heart may be narrowed from birth or hardening of the arteries, this would put stress on the heart muscle. If you do have congestive heart failure, it could be managed successfully including heart transplant. Good luck. READ MORE

  • How do you get rid of fluid around the heart?

How you get rid of fluid around the heart depends on what is causing it. It could be as simple as taking anti-inflammatory medications if it is secondary to minor infections. Sometimes, we aspirate the fluid with needle and hope that it does not come back. In more serious situations, an opening is made in the pericardium to facilitate drainage into the pleural cavity where the fluid can be better tolerated. Too much fluid around the heart may compromise function. In more serious situations caused by serious infection like tuberculosis, the entire pericardium may have to be removed. By the way pericardium is the sac that encloses the heart. Its primary function is to protect the heart. Your doctor can show you pictures. Good luck. READ MORE

  • How long is end stage heart failure?

I don't think it can be quantified into months or years. There are many factors involved including the careful management of the underlying disease. Some people may be lucky to receive heart transplant as part of the management of the end stage disease. Good luck to you! READ MORE

  • Can I drive after cardiac ablation?

Yes, but not immediately after the procedure. Give yourself about a week or more. All instructions are usually given by the physician following the procedure. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Can you walk up stairs after open heart surgery?

Yes, you can without shortness of breath. READ MORE

  • How do you get rid of calcium deposits in your arteries?

Hardening of the arteries can result from several factors including diets and social habits. Stop smoking; avoid fatty food; avoid foods with high calcium content like milk, cheese. Exercise is good and helps to minimize worsening symptoms. Good luck! READ MORE

  • Do you need a blood transfusion after open heart surgery?

Not necessarily. There is something called hemodilution whereby your own blood is diluted with electrolyte solution. That is admitted to the patient during and after the procedure. For your information, Jehovah’s witnesses have open heart surgery and they do not take regular blood transfusion. READ MORE

  • Is coronary artery disease curable?

Coronary artery disease is manageable with normal life if appropriate medications and appropriate dietary regimens are maintained. Curable is not a word we use for this disease. Good luck. READ MORE

  • What are the psychological effects of a stroke?

Stroke is a devastating illness. It deprives you of things that you are used to doing and take for granted. Your speech may be impaired; your mobility may be impaired. As a result of this disability as you probably guess already, patients get depressed. Depression is a major psychological after effect of stroke. With that said, it is treatable by seeing your internist. Good luck! READ MORE

  • Can you feel stents in your heart?

No, you cannot feel the stent placed in the arteries. It is protected by the heart muscle. The heart itself is protected in the chest cavity. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Should you lie down during a heart attack?

Your best position is probably sitting in a semi upright position. Laying flat may make breathing more difficult. READ MORE

  • How long after a heart transplant can you return to normal life?

You should be back to normal in 6 weeks to 3 months taking all your immunosuppressive drugs regularly. The definition of normal differs. READ MORE

  • Will I have more energy after a stent?

You should have more energy because there is increased blood flow rich in oxygen flowing into your heart muscle. READ MORE
