Get to know Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Anna Bernus, who serves patients in Tampa, Florida.

A sought-after pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Bernus is in practice with Pediatric Cardiology Associates in Tampa, Florida.

“Pediatric Cardiology Associates opened its doors in 1977 as the first pediatric cardiology program on the west coast of Florida. Since then, we have recruited nationally and internationally respected specialists in all areas of pediatric cardiology, including arrhythmia, fetal, therapeutic interventions and transplant cardiology. We also helped to establish the Tampa Bay Congenital Heart Center to treat the growing population of adults with congenital heart conditions. With over 170 years of combined experience, we are the largest comprehensive program in the state of Florida” as stated on their website. 

Specializing in non-invasive cardiology and pulmonary hypertension, Dr. Bernus is affiliated with Tampa General Hospital, Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, St. Joseph’s Hospital-Tampa, Brandon Regional Hospital, Mease Countryside Hospital, Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and AdventHealth Tampa.

Remaining up to date in her field, she remains an active member of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, the American College of Cardiology (Fellow), the American Academy of Pediatrics (Fellow), the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Echocardiography.

Born in Girona (Catalonia), Dr. Bernus first came to the United States at age 16 as a high school exchange student. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in molecular and cell biology. She began medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara under the Fifth Pathway Program, completing her medical degree at the New York Medical College in 2001. She then completed her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in 2004, and her fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Colorado Denver in 2007, where she remained as an instructor in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Her clinical interest during fellowship was in pulmonary hypertension. 

In 2007, Dr. Bernus moved back to California to join the staff at Loma Linda University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Her work focuses on pulmonary hypertension from the newborn to the adult congenital patient. She is also involved in non-invasive cardiology, echocardiography, and CICU/postoperative care.

An member of Heart Care International and Surgeon’s of Hope, she has done several missions to Africa, Central and South America providing cardiac care to children. She moved to the Tampa Bay area in the summer of 2009 when she joined Pediatric Cardiology Associates. 

Passionate about her profession, Dr. Bernus is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Pediatric cardiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating heart problems in children. In those children who might need heart surgery, pediatric cardiologists work closely with pediatric heart surgeons to determine the best treatments and interventions.

On a more personal note, Dr. Bernus resides in Tampa with her husband, David and son, Ethan. She speaks multiple languages, including English, Catalan, French, and Spanish.
