Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Vishal M. Kothari, who serves patients in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dr. Kothari is a board-certified general surgeon who performs several types of surgeries, including intestinal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, and more. He practices at Nebraska Medicine – Lauritzen Outpatient Center in Omaha, Nebraska. However, he also provides his services within the Bariatrics Center at the Nebraska Medical Center and the Multispecialty Clinic at Village Pointe Health Center – both of which are a part of Nebraska Medicine.

Since 2011, Dr. Kothari has held the academic appointment of Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Founded as a private medical college in 1880, UNMC is now a public center of health sciences research, patient care, and education in Omaha.

After earning his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2005, Dr. Kothari went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in general surgery at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York in 2006 and 2010, respectively. A year later, in 2011, he completed his fellowship in minimally invasive & advanced laparoscopic surgery at UNMC.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. 

Furthermore, he is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
