When should I worry about my child not talking?
I think a referral would be good now for speech therapy based on the fact that he is not making many sounds or babbling. I also recommend using “baby” signs with him for “more”, “please”, “all done”, “drink” and “eat”. READ MORE
My son is 3-years-old and isn't talking. What should I do?
I would recommend going to your pediatrician and asking for a referral for speech therapy. He definitely needs some interventions. The school district also has pre-k programs for children with speech and language delays. He needs an evaluation. READ MORE
What can be done to help my 5 year old son speak more clearly?
Hi, It is difficult to tell you what you can do because his reduced speech intelligibility could be a result of several things. I recommend getting your child evaluated by a speech-language pathologist to determine what is interfering with his ability to be understood. Most SLPs will give you a home program to work with your child at home and generalize new skills. Thanks, Angie Ellenbecker MS, CCC-SLP READ MORE
My daughter speaks very loudly, should we visit a speech-language pathologist?
1. I would have her hearing screened. 2. Make an index card with a paper clip. Make a scale with too loud, just right, too quiet. Slide the paper clip to different sections, and practice using the voice in that section. Cue her with the card when she is talking too loudly. If she can’t self-monitor herself after some practice and prompts, I would then refer to a speech therapist. 3. Watch a tv program and identify characters in the different zones of loudness. Thanks, Angie Ellenbecker MS, CCC-SLP READ MORE
