Dr. Scimeca is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist who sees patients at his private practice in New York, New York. He is also affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital, which is one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in the United States.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Chartered by Mount Sinai Hospital in 1963, it is the academic teaching arm of the Mount Sinai Health System, which manages eight hospital campuses in the New York metropolitan area.

A 1978 graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dr. Scimeca went on to complete his residency in psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center.

Following his training, the doctor became board-certified in addiction psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

For the purpose of advancing his efforts, he remains a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the New York Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. He is also a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Addiction psychiatry is a medical subspecialty within psychiatry that focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of people who are suffering from one or more disorders related to addiction. This may include disorders involving legal and illegal drugs, gambling, sex, food, and other impulse control disorders. Psychiatrists who are trained in addiction are in a unique position to identify concurrent psychiatric and substance use problems in patients seeking treatment for either or both conditions.
