Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Ramon Bonegio, who serves patients in Boston, Massachusetts.

As a fellowship-trained nephrologist, Dr. Bonegio works within the Department of Renal Medicine at Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts. His specialities include lupus nephritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, autoimmune kidney disease, vasculitis, and chronic kidney disease.

The Renal Department at Boston Medical Center is a nationally recognized research and training program in nephrology for more than five decades. Basic science research in the division focuses on the immunopathogenesis of glomerular diseases, structural biology of the glomerulus, mechanisms of autoimmunity, renal cystic disease and cancer, kidney development, and mechanisms of cell injury in acute renal failure.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Bonegio serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine. 

His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1990. He then went on to perform two residencies at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, and a fellowship in nephrology at Boston Medical Center in 2003.

An expert in his field, Dr. Bonegio is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

The doctor’s research interests include systemic lupus erythematosus, immune-complex glomerulonephritis, and autoimmune kidney disease.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.
