Eye surgeons, eye professionals, and other physicians of various specialties entrusted their eyes to the experienced surgical care and management by Dr. Iskander when they underwent eye surgery. He is known for his thorough examinations with his compassionate and honest approach. His surgical finesse is aided by the use of state-of-the-art diagnostics, surgical equipment, and techniques.
As a fellowship-trained refractive specialist, Dr. Iskander has been performing thousands of intraocular refractive procedures like Clear Lens Extractions (CLE) and Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI) for over 20 years. He is one of the few refractive specialists in San Antonio who implants the Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), and is a prominent authority on the procedure before it was FDA-approved in the USA.
One of the most experienced surgeons in laser cataract surgery in Texas, Dr. Iskander is the first certified surgeon in Texas on the LENSAR laser cataract surgery technology. As both an accomplished refractive and cataract surgeon, he was a pioneer in combining his refractive experience with cataract surgery to achieve spectacle independence for his patients. He utilized LRIs to treat astigmatism during cataract surgery before the advent of premium intraocular lenses.
An expert on toric intraocular lens technology for correction of astigmatism, he has successfully implanted thousands of toric lenses using multiple platforms like Alcon, Johnson & Johnson, and Bausch + Lomb. As a refractive specialist, he was also a pioneer in using different multifocal and accommodating intraocular lens technologies before they gained popularity.
The first surgeon to implant Tecnis Multifocal low-add lenses in South Texas, he uses various advanced intraocular lens technologies to best maximize the visual needs of his patients based on the individual characteristics of their eyes.
A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of Alexandria, Dr. Iskander trained at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and the Prestigious Kresge Eye Institute in Michigan. He further underwent a sub-specialty fellowship training in refractive surgery, the science and art of surgical vision correction, with an international pioneer in refractive surgery, Dr. Howard Gimbel, the 2019 inductee into the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame.
Successful in his field, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Holding fellowship status, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Having been performing laser vision correction procedures including LASIK, LASEK, and PRK since the late 1990’s, Dr. Iskander holds certifications for mastering every excimer laser vision correction platform approved by the FDA in the USA. He embraced “All Laser” Femtosecond LASIK technology at its introduction to the USA and is highly experienced on the Z-LASIK and i-LASIK platforms. Similarly, he also embraced wave-front guided and wave-front optimized laser treatments that revolutionized LASIK treatments and is highly experienced on all FDA approved platforms; Customvue, Zioptics, Wavelight, and CZ LASIK.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and may perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
Sought out locally, nationally, and internationally, Dr. Iskander co-authored a textbook on LASIK, has many publications in peer reviewed journals, and is frequently consulted by his colleagues and patients as an expert in his field for difficult cases and for remedying surgical complications.
For his contributions to the science of ophthalmology, he was awarded the Bausch and Lomb achievement award for his pioneering experience on the Zyoptix custom LASIK platform. He was the first surgeon in Texas to introduce Carl Zeiss Excimer laser technology, and is the first surgeon in south Texas to implant the newest generation toric intraocular lenses by Johnson and Johnson.
More recently, he is one of few surgeons in San Antonio to offer the revolutionary topography guided Contoura treatments to his patients. It is a technological leap that offers personalized “thumbprint” treatments based on individual surface corneal characteristics.
Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Iskander enjoys traveling with his family, watching soccer games, and is an avid history buff.
