Get to know Hospitalist Dr. Raphael H. Pristoop, who serves patients in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Pristoop is a board-certified hospitalist working at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. 

His clinical areas of focus include abdominal pain, allergies, cough, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, physical exams, rash, sinusitis, sore throat, and urinary tract infections. He is also affiliated with MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.

Graduating with his undergraduate degree from Brown University, Dr. Pristoop went on to earn his medical degree from the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in Israel. He then relocated to the United States, performing his residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York.

Successful in his field, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Pristoop’s prior employment includes Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York & the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, he is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists in some countries as a branch of family medicine or internal medicine, dealing with the care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. Hospitalists manage day-to-day care and provide prompt and complete attention to all patient care needs including diagnosis, treatment, and the performance of medical procedures (within their scope of practice).

Throughout his career, Dr. Pristoop has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including: James A. Curtain Award for the Most Outstanding Clinical Educator, Department of Internal Medicine, Washington Hospital Center, 2017 and 2020; Fellow of the American College of Physicians, 2019; and Award for Outstanding Dedication and Service, Department of Internal Medicine, Kings County Hospital Center, 2012.
