Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Zafar Nafis Naqvi, who serves patients in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Dr. Naqvi is currently working as a psychiatrist in charge at the Alcohol, Drug, and Addiction Inpatient Program at McLean Hospital and is also a member of the Institute of Coaching at McLean. With over 21 years of cross-cultural experience as a psychiatrist and 10 years as a psychoanalyst, his special interests include treating patients with eating disorders as well as patients with drug and alcohol addiction.

McLean Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. It is noted for its clinical staff expertise and neuroscience research and is also known for the large number of famous people who have been treated there.

The Institute of Coaching at McLean, Harvard Medical School Affiliate, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring scientific integrity in the field of coaching. Its mission is to disseminate the best coaching science and empower individuals to catalyze positive change in themselves, the community, and the world around them.

Educated in Pakistan, Dr. Naqvi graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Dow Medical College in 1994. He then trained in psychiatry at Aga Khan University Hospital, which is the state-of-the-art hospital in South Asia. After that, he went to England and was trained through the Royal College of Psychiatrists and also obtained a Psych.D in Psychiatry and Mental Health from University of KEELE. He migrated to the United States and completed his fellowship training in psychodynamic psychiatry at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. In 2010, he completed his residency in psychiatry at the Drexel University College of Medicine and after completing his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at UMass, he remained as faculty in the Division of Addiction Psychiatry.

Dedicated to excellence, the doctor is board-certified in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

Furthermore, he is board-certified through the American Board of Addiction Medicine, which provides assurance to the American public that Addiction Medicine physicians have the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and treat addiction.

Having remained actively involved in academia throughout his career, Dr. Naqvi is an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He believes that the process of teaching helps one learn how to learn. 

He has written several articles to combat the stigma associated with mental illnesses. He values the in-depth understanding of individuals as an aspect of providing comprehensive care and believes that through use of informed treatment models and addressing co-occurring substance abuse and mental illness, the dynamics behind the patient’s symptoms can be understood to effectively improve outcomes.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
