  • Do you get put to sleep for a nose job?

Most likely, yes... You will be getting general anesthesia for a cosmetic procedure and it’s preferable to be under general anesthesia. Your surgeon doesn’t want you moving during the procedure. You are looking to have a great cosmetic look following your operation. So a quiet and controlled operative field is desired. Also, it’s important to control your blood pressure. You want a normal blood pressure and not a high one; with a high blood pressure you bruise more. Remember, you want a beautiful cosmetic result. You’ll do great!! READ MORE

  • Can I be asleep for my oral surgery?

Yes, many patients need general anesthesia for jaw surgery. There are many sorts of jaw surgical procedures. Some involve the mandibular rami, maxillary, etc.. Ask your oral surgeon if general anesthesia is an option for you. You will do fantastic. Please don’t be worried. General anesthesia is safe and reliable. READ MORE

  • What are the effects of anesthesia after surgery?

Good question; first and foremost all medications and gases used for general anesthesia are mood altering drugs. Meaning following surgery you may not feel normal. Your ability to make decisions may be altered. So, don’t make any life changing decisions until about 72 hours following surgery. Notice how you feel post operatively. You may be nauseous following neck surgery. You may have pain; remember pain is highly individualistic. The best advice I can give you following surgery is to consume an anti-inflammatory diet. Google it! Why? Because surgery and general anesthesia is an extreme stress to your body. Following surgery your body needs to repair itself, and it will as long as you feed it highly nutritious foods. You will do fantastic. Share your concerns with your anesthesiologist. Anesthesia is very safe today. READ MORE

  • Can I get anesthesia while removing a port wine stain?

Please don’t be afraid. When lasers are in use, the area is anesthetized with local anesthesia. Like when you go to a dentist, the operative tooth is anesthetized with a local anesthetic. Additionally, some dermatologists performing the procedure may give you a sedative by mouth or even through an IV if one is placed into one of your veins. No reason to be afraid. You’ll do fantastic! • Can you be put to sleep for a root canal while pregnant?

I wouldn’t provide you general anesthesia in the first trimester. The first trimester is crucial for fetal development and growth. You can have a nerve block over the tooth being worked on. The decision to give you midazolam and/or fentanyl IV during the root canal in the first trimester is controversial. Some anesthesiologists would and others wouldn’t. No Demerol for IV sedation. If you were my patient I would encourage just a nerve block. If it’s the dentist providing the sedation or offering you sedation, again only the nerve block. Relax your mind and be at peace during the root canal with just a nerve block. You will do great! READ MORE

  • What are the odds of not waking up from anesthesia?

As long as your daughter is medically healthy without known illnesses she is extremely safe under general anesthesia. She will be monitored with standard of care guidelines and the competency of the anesthesiologist will be outstanding. General anesthesia is extremely safe. Only 1:10,000-100,000 deaths related to anesthesia. Your daughter is safer in the operating room than the drive you will be taking to the surgery center or hospital for her procedure. She will do fantastic! READ MORE

  • Can you be put under anesthesia for an endoscopy?

Typically during endoscopy you will receive intravenous sedation. A propofol infusion with a sedative hypnotic like versed and an analgesic like fentanyl is safe and reliable. No reason to be afraid or anxious. You will do fantastic! READ MORE

  • Does a colonoscopy hurt with sedation?

When you are sedated, you won’t feel any pain. Sedation through IV is ideal for a colonoscopy. READ MORE

  • What does a dentist use to put you to sleep?

Typically a dentist uses sedation with Demerol and versed and possibly some nitrous oxide. Additionally he/she will perform nerve bocks to those molars being removed. You will be comfortable. READ MORE

  • How long does anesthesia take to wear off in a child?

It all depends on the length of the procedure, the type of surgery being done and the amount of narcotic and sedative employed while under anesthesia. The longer the procedure, over an hour or so the longer for your child to awaken. Typically most children awaken in the operating room and by the time they are in the recovery room they will be able to recognize you. Your child will do fantastic. Anesthesia and surgery is very safe. READ MORE

  • Can I opt for general anesthesia for foot surgery?

Yes, you can ask to receive general anesthesia. Maybe there is a reason why your anesthesiologist doesn’t want to use general anesthesia? Maybe you’ve got some chronic medical illnesses which pose a risk for general anesthesia? Talk with your anesthesiologist. There are many foot surgeries that in fact may be done with IV sedation combined with local and/or nerve blocks. READ MORE

  • How long does local anesthesia take to work?

Typically local anesthetic stake about 15 mins. Once the arthroscopy starts you may feel some pressure particularly when the lateral meniscus is being interrogated. At this moment in time the surgeon may instill additional local anesthetic. Also you may receive some light sedation through your IV if you have one in place. You’ll do fantastic. READ MORE

  • Are you put to sleep for an endoscopy?

You will most likely be given a propofol infusion for sedation. You will not recall events with propofol. It’s rare for a patient to have complete general anesthesia for an upper endoscopy. READ MORE

  • Are you put to sleep for angioplasty?

Typically not. You will receive IV sedation most likely. It’s the rare situation (at least in my experience) when you’ll be given deep sedation or general anesthesia. You will be comfortable during the procedure. Your cardiologist will be using local anesthesia to numb the insertion sites in your groin. It’s important to stay still during the procedure. These procedures last about one hour. READ MORE

  • Are you awake during appendix surgery?

Typically appendectomy is performed under general anesthesia with an endotracheal tube placed through the vocal cords into the wind pipe. Appendectomy can also be performed under spinal or epidural anesthesia while the patient is awake though sedated. When procedures are performed under local is because the patient may be very ill or the patient may be pregnant. I’ve performed spinal/epidural anesthesia on pregnant women so as not to get the gases absorbed through the placenta to the fetus. READ MORE

  • Is anesthesia necessary for cataract surgery?

All you need is a light sedation. You will be asked to move your eyes upon command so the phacoemulsification May be performed safely. READ MORE

  • Is local anesthesia used during breast biopsy?

I would recommend local anesthesia with intravenous sedation if the needle localization is just under the skin. If the biopsy is deeper in the breast tissue then intravenous anesthesia ( general anesthesia) is preferable. Breast tissue is highly sensitive. Also, your surgeon may have a preference for the sort of anesthesia he/she is comfortable with you. What is paramount is your feelings and making sure you don’t experience any discomfort. READ MORE

  • What type of anesthesia is used during broken hand surgery?

Typically general anesthesia. The reason for general anesthesia is because the surgeon may need to have your friend paralyzed. This allows the surgeon to approximate the fixation with muscular paralysis. Some surgeons may request a brachial nerve block. Typically a supraclavicular or axillary nerve block for post op pain relief. Don’t have a nerve block if the nerves have been exposed to broken bone. READ MORE

  • Do you need general anesthesia for endoscopy?

there are different kinds of endoscopy procedures. Typically general anesthesia isn’t required. I use what is called total intravenous anesthesia with IV propofol. Propofol is infused in through your IV along with fentanyl and versed. This combination will work wonderful for you. READ MORE

  • Does anesthesia cause hair loss?

Hair loss from general anesthesia, meaning the use of anesthetic gases and/ or propofol infusion is clinically and scientifically truly unknown; I’ve never seen a case of hair loss attributable to general anesthesia. Hair loss is very common with stressful circumstances; no doubt any surgery is highly stressful. Reduce the inflammation/oxidation of stressful situations by consuming an anti-inflammatory diet. If your sister had a surgery that lasted many hours and her head was in the same place for these many hours then hair loss may occur over the pressure points of her scalp. These patches of hair loss will grow back. Any illness, either acute or chronic causes stress ( increased oxidation at the cellular level). Try yoga to reduce the stress in her life. Maybe an MD near where you live can provide peptide therapy for your sister. The peptide Thymosin Beta 4 on the scalp allows the hair to grow. READ MORE
