    While it isn’t an absolute requirement it is often preferred by the patient and the surgeon because these surgical procedures can last quite a while. For an awake and maybe even sedated patient, the beds become uncomfortable and you can’t freely move and stretch or change positions as it would interfere with the surgery. Add to this other issues such as heart failure, sleep apnea, or back problems, and you’ll be asking to go to sleep sooner than later. But I have done many of these with IV sedation and an eye block without problem. READ MORE

    Well you didn’t specify the type of surgery you are having so it does depend. Many times we intentionally take over your breathing for you, and other times we keep you breathing on your own.   • Can a person have surgery without anesthesia?

    It definitely depends on the type of surgery, but local anesthesia can go a long long way. Many times things are done without anything but local anesthesia. Another option is regional anesthesia, which includes field blocks, extremity blocks, spinal and epidural anesthesia. There is so much that can be done that general anesthesia can often be avoided. However, sometimes it cannot, an example of which would be a spine surgery. Either way, be sure to discuss the options with your anesthesia provider on the day of surgery or try to call and speak to the hospital or center before the day of surgery to discuss options, leaving you time to research further if you choose.
