Does Modafinil help fibromyalgia fatigue?
Modafinil is not an approved or standard treatment for fibromyalgia, but it has been studied in small trials and case reports for specific symptoms associated with fibromyalgiaparticularly fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness. Heres a summary of whats known Potential benefit Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that modafinil may help reduce fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia, especially in those who also have significant sleep disturbances or excessive daytime sleepiness. A few trials e.g., doubleblind placebocontrolled studies have found modest improvements in fatigue and alertness, but not necessarily in pain or overall fibromyalgia symptom severity. Limitations Modafinil does not appear to significantly improve pain, tender points, or core fibromyalgia features aside from fatigue. Its use in fibromyalgia is offlabel, meaning its not FDAapproved for this purpose. There is limited longterm data on its safety and efficacy in fibromyalgia patients. Risks and considerations Modafinil can cause side effects such as headache, insomnia, nervousness, and increased blood pressure. It may not be appropriate for all patients, especially those with cardiovascular issues or certain psychiatric conditions. Bottom line Modafinil might be considered as an offlabel option in fibromyalgia patients with severe fatigue that hasnt responded to other therapies, but its not a firstline treatment. Management of fibromyalgia generally focuses on exercise, cognitivebehavioral therapy, sleep hygiene, and medications like SNRIs e.g., duloxetine, pregabalin, or milnacipran. READ MORE
