Get to know Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Brenda E. Matos Perez, who serves patients in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Dr. Perez is a respected child and adolescent psychiatrist with the VA Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System provides services to a population of 150,000 Veterans in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In FY 2008, the VA Caribbean Healthcare System registered 66,955 unique patients with 11,428 inpatient treated and provided 927,072 outpatient visits at all clinic areas in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its mission is to “Honor America’s Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.”

Graduating with her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1994, Dr. Matos went on to further her training. She performed her residency in psychiatry and her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Puerto Rico in 1998 and 1999, respectively. 

Licensed to practice medicine in Puerto Rico, she has nearly three decades of experience in the field of medicine. 

Child and adolescent psychiatry, also known as pediatric psychiatry, is a branch of psychiatry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders in children, adolescents, and their families. A child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling, as well as behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families.
