Luis Fernandez, MD, KHS, KCOEG, FACS, FASAS, FCCP, FCCM, FICS, holds the position of Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the UT Health Science Center-Tyler, Texas. He also serves as the William Barrett Endowed Chair in Trauma Surgery at the University of Texas-Tyler School of Medicine and is the Medical Director of Trauma Wound Care at UT Health East-Tyler, TX. Additionally, he is a member of the American College of Surgeons National Committee on Trauma. Together with Dr. Scott Norwood, he co-established the trauma programs in Tyler, TX. From 1993 to 2019, Dr. Fernandez held the role of Director of Trauma Surgery and Trauma Surgeon-in-Chief at Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler, TX. He also served as the Chairman of the Division of Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, Chairman Emeritus of the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Associate Medical Trauma Director, Chief Flight Surgeon, and Chief of Trauma/SICU at CHRISTUS MFH. He is board-certified in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, Forensic Traumatology, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Dr. Fernandez was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery and Family Practice at UTHCT, Tyler, from 1983 to 2019. He currently holds the position of Adjunct Clinical Professor of Nursing and Medicine at the U.T. Arlington School of Nursing, as well as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Education at UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX, and in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at UNT’s School of Health Professions. He has also served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at both the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois in Chicago. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and various other organizations, Dr. Fernandez has an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and he has delivered numerous presentations at both national and international conferences. Dr. Fernandez is a distinguished Texas Medical Ranger, a retired Brigadier General in the Texas State Guard, and served as the TXSG Medical Brigade commander from 2009 to 2014. He currently acts as Vice Chairman of the State Guard Association of the United States Medical Academy and is the Commander Emeritus of the Texas Commandery of the Military Order of Foreign Wars.
