Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Baumholtz, who serves patients in Shavano Park, Texas.
Dr. Baumholtz, affectionately known as Dr. B, is a board-certified plastic & reconstructive surgeon whose expertise encompasses a wide variety of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures ranging from mommy makeover and rhinoplasty to facelift and post-bariatric body contouring.
In private practice in Shavano Park, Texas, he prides himself on the relationships he builds and maintains with each of his patients. He believes in helping his patients look and feel better about themselves.
Among his educational pursuits, Dr. B earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Kenyon College, a Master of Science degree from Thomas Jefferson University, and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College (Philadelphia). After medical school, he completed a general surgery residency at York Hospital and became board-certified in general surgery. He then went on to complete a hand and microsurgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston followed by a residency in plastic and reconstructive residency in San Antonio at the University of Texas Health Science Center. His training encompassed both adult and pediatric patients.
After completing his training in San Antonio, Dr. B returned to Philadelphia for 4 years. There, he was an Assistant Professor and Staff Surgeon at Temple University Hospital in the Division of Plastic Surgery & the Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.
“I love practicing plastic surgery in San Antonio. I had to come back and set roots here” expressed the doctor.
Currently, he is on staff at many of the hospitals in San Antonio - Christus Santa Rosa, Cumberland Surgical Hospital, and the Audie L Murphy Veterans Hospital (where he serves as the Chief Plastic Surgeon). He has served in physician leadership positions and remains part of the teaching faculty at UTHSCSA for the Plastic Surgery fellowship program.
Actively involved in his professional societies, Dr. B is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Bexar County Medical Society. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories - reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done.
Giving back to the plastic surgery community, Dr. B has lectured widely to other physicians and surgeons on topics of plastic and hand surgery including sternal reconstruction, complex hernia repair, post-bariatric body contouring, head and neck reconstruction, hand trauma, and upper / lower extremity reconstruction. He has published a number of articles on both adult and pediatric plastic surgical issues, and his work has been presented at regional, national, and international meetings. He was awarded 1st place paper by the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons at their annual meeting and is honored to continue to teach other surgeons and trainees.
In 2017, he was honored to serve as a guest examiner for the Certifying Examination in Plastic Surgery (American Board of Plastic Surgery).
Although originally from Philadelphia, Dr. B couldn’t escape the draw of Texas! While he misses his beloved cheesesteaks, he is loving San Antonio.
