Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Juan M. Ortega-Legaspi, who serves patients throughout the State of Pennsylvania.

A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Ortega-Legaspi is affiliated with the Penn Heart and Vascular Center, working with patients in Philadelphia and Radnor, Pennsylvania.

The team of physicians at Penn Medicine's Heart and Vascular Center are dedicated to getting patients back to the life they want to live. With the region's largest cardiac arrhythmia, valve disease, vascular surgery, heart failure and heart transplant programs, they are committed to delivering more options, more personalized care and more convenient care close to home. They are also home to the Cardiovascular Research Institute where Penn researchers are relentlessly pursuing new advances in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular conditions.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Ortega-Legaspi graduated with his medical degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Emory University in 2013, before completing a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Washington in 2016, and a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2018.

An expert in his field, the doctor is board-certified in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Additionally, Dr Ortega-Legaspi has focused part of his practice to seeing patients with end stage congenital heart disease who need advanced heart failure therapies (heart transplantation or mechanical circulatory support). He collaborates closely with specialists in adult congenital heart disease as well as pediatric cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. 

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).
