Get to know Otolaryngologist Dr. Norman E. Schaefer, who served patients in Chatham, New Jersey as well as all over the world.

Dr. Schaefer is a retired Summit Medical Group otolaryngologist in Chatham, New Jersey. During his 30 active years on the job, he offered medical and surgical care for patients suffering from complications, diseases, and disorders of the head and neck – including the ears, nose, and throat. 

Dr, Norman Schaefer restored hearing to more than 1500 patients all over the world .  This procedure called a stapendectumy replaces the smallest bone in the human body  with a prosthesis. It is very delicate procedure and he  has a file of hundreds of  patients thanking him .  for their restored hearing. He was the first doctor in New Jersey to perform this operation.  Overlook Hospital in Summit New Jersey, where he did his surgery set up a whole division with special equipment just for him. 

Beginning his medical career as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force, Colonel Schaefer served as the Commander of Aeromedical Evacuation on a number of missions to treat wounded soldiers. One such mission was Desert Storm in 1990 where he headed up a medical unit as Commander in Germany treating 5000 patients coming from Saudi Arabia . He retired from the Air Force in 1992 after serving 49 distinguished years. It marks the longest service record of any United States  AirForce  or any military person from all the services.. 

A graduate of Cornell Medical School, he became an ear, nose and throat surgeon in 1957. In 2018, the Borough of Chatham Council recognized Dr. Schaefer for his 28 years of service on the Chatham Board of Health  which was a record..

Otolaryngology is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists, also known as ear, nose, and throat doctors, specialize in disorders of the head and neck, ranging from hearing loss to cancer. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Schaefer is married. His wife, Irene, is a retired flight attendant. He has a daughter, Carolyn Bruno and , son-in-law Mark Bruno, Two grandsons David and William Bruno two Great granddaughters Amanda and Kristina Bruno.
