Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Jeremy L. Ward, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

An excellent general surgeon, Dr. Ward holds the position of Medical Director of Trauma Surgery ICU at Ben Taub Hospital. 

To boot, he is affiliated with the Baylor College of Medicine, where he is the Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. His clinical interests include elective and emergency general surgery, trauma surgery, and the management of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. 

Located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, Ben Taub Hospital has garnered respect both locally and worldwide as an outstanding acute care facility and an elite Level I trauma center. This 444 licensed-bed hospital houses the Ginni and Richard Mithoff Trauma Center, which cares for more than 80,000 emergency patients each year and is known to save the lives of some of the most critically injured.

Academically, Dr. Ward earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with high honors in mathematics at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He then obtained his medical degree at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and began his general surgery residency at the same educational venue. During that time, he spent two years as an NIH T32 research fellow, studying sepsis in murine models. He completed his final three years of residency training at NYU School of Medicine in New York City where he was chief resident at Bellevue Hospital. 

Thereafter, Dr. Ward completed a two-year fellowship in acute care surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, which included a surgical critical care fellowship through the Department of Critical Care Medicine followed by a one-year appointment as Clinical Instructor with the Division of Trauma and General Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During this time, he obtained additional training in the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the management of advanced cardiac and respiratory failure through the Department of Critical Care Medicine.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.

During his long and illustrious career, Dr. Ward has been the recipient of various honors and accolades, including the Dr. H. Leon Pachter Award for Teaching Excellence by the NYU Department of Surgery, and the Early-Career Award for Excellence in Patient Care by Baylor College of Medicine.
