Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Robert D. Matheney, who serves patients in Marrero, Louisiana.

Dr. Matheney is a highly-trained cardiologist in practice with West Jefferson Heart Clinic of Louisiana, active in the development of its peripheral vascular disease clinic. His specialties include interventional cardiology and peripheral percutaneous interventions, including coronary and renal angiography, angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, lower extremity angioplasty, placement of permanent pacemakers and cardiac defibrillators. 

Heart Clinic of Louisiana is dedicated to serving the cardiology needs of the greater New Orleans area and surrounding communities. It offers the level of skill and expertise that comes only from years of experience in the most advanced techniques used by cardiologists today. These eight physicians form one of the largest and most comprehensive adult cardiology groups in Southeast Louisiana, utilizing the latest technology available for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and peripheral diseases.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Matheney graduated with his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in 1988. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at the Tulane University School of Medicine, followed by his fellowship in cardiology with the University of Tennessee. 

Specializing in heart health, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Recognized by his peers for his expertise in clinical cardiology, Dr. Matheney is active in both the state and local chapters of the American Heart Association (of which he is a Fellow – FAHA). He is also active in educating students and residents at Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).
