I find my breasts becoming very heavy before my period. Is it normal?
It is very much normal. READ MORE
Why is there a foul smell in my white discharge?
Most commonly this is due to an infection called bacterial vaginosis. Less common causes are an STD called Trichomoniasis or a retained tampon. READ MORE
I recently experienced an ectopic pregnancy. How did this happen?
Sometime in the past you must have had an infection in the Fallopian tubes (pelvic inflammatory disease) that caused scarring within the tiny lumen of your Fallopian tubes. This infection may have even been subclinical (without any significant symptoms). My advice to you is that next time you become pregnant make sure to see a doctor soon after missing your period to make sure the pregnancy is inside the uterus. READ MORE
Is surgery the only way to treat uterine fibroids?
Abnormal bleeding is most often due to a hormonal imbalance which can be treated by hormonal therapy. If the symptoms are significant, and they fail to respond to hormonal therapy, and sonography confirms the presence of fibroids then the options are uterine artery embolization, hysterectomy or surgical removal of fibroids; the latter only if the patient desires fertility. Are sexual lubricant gels safe?

What causes implantation bleeding?
The egg gets fertilized while traveling through the Fallopian tube. The fertilized egg then continues to travel until it enters the uterine cavity. In order for the pregnancy to happen this fertilized egg needs to sort of burrow a tiny hole into the lining of the uterus and attach itself there. Burrowing this tiny hole can cause some bleeding. Why do I have back pain during my period?
When you have a period the uterus which is essentially a type of muscle contracts perhaps to try to slow down the bleeding. In some women these uterine contractions are more painful than in other women, and the pain can radiate via the nerves that innervate the uterus to the back of the lower extremities. The good news is that the intensity of menstrual cramps tends to decrease after having the first baby. Also the cramps often respond to non-steriodal anti-inflammatory medications or various hormonal contraceptives. Severe cramps that do not respond to medical therapy could be due to a condition called endometriosis. READ MORE

Why do I have a burning sensation while urinating during my periods?
The cyclic nature of your symptoms is unusual, but they may be due to vaginal yeast infection, Trichomoniasis, Chlamydia or a condition of unclear etiology that we call urethral syndrome. READ MORE
Is it risky to delay my conception with PCOD?
With or without PCOS, fertility in MOST women tends to decline starting at the age of 35. But there are extremes also. On the one hand, I had a patient who conceived naturally at 47. On the other hand, I have 2 patients whose periods stopped somewhere around the age of 30-32, and blood work confirmed that they both had premature ovarian failure or premature menopause. READ MORE
My sister has hemophillia. Should she have a baby?
Hemophilia A is an X-linked recessive disorder. Your sister's sex chromosome is XX, and for her to have hemophilia, both of her X chromosomes must have the abnormal hemophilia gene. She will contribute one of those abnormal X chromosomes to each of her children. Since males have a single X chromosome, all of her male children will be affected. Since females have two X chromosomes, all of her daughters would be carriers of the disease, but none of them would be affected unless they happen to inherit an abnormal X chromosome from their father. I'm pregnant, and I feel like I'm gaining a lot of weight. Is there anything I can do?
As long as the cause of the weight gain is not preeclampsia, don't worry about it. Just diet and exercise after the delivery. READ MORE
I was diagnosed with inflammed pelvic disease that caused blockages. Will I ever be able to concieve?
Depends on whether the blockage is complete or partial. In case of a true complete blockage the only way to conceive is in-vitro fertilization. READ MORE
