Get to know Family Physician Dr. Mayes DuBose, who serves patients in Sumter, South Carolina.
Dr. DuBose is a board-certified family physician who launched Carolina Concierge Care in Sumter, South Carolina in 2019. He accepts patients 50 years old and older at his concierge practice.
“I love practicing medicine. I believe it has truly been a calling for my life and I cannot imagine doing anything else,” says Dr. DuBose.
At his concierge, or membership medicine practice, Dr. DuBose offers enhanced services as well as personal availability. Patients benefit from longer office visits, 24/7 direct availability to Dr. DuBose, and no waiting room time.
“Concierge medicine is care that patients deserve. I feel this is the environment we should all be practicing in, so patients can receive highly personalized care, with less hurried visits from a less harried physician,” he says.
A Sumter native, Dr. DuBose graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Clemson University in 1996. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia in 2000. He completed his residency in family medicine at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in 2003, followed by a fellowship in geriatrics at the University of Connecticut Health Consortium in 2005. After completing his fellowship, he returned to Sumter and opened the first geriatric practice. In 2019, he worked with Specialdocs Consultants to launch the area’s first concierge medicine practice.
“We are gratified to help Dr. DuBose realize his deeply felt vision of providing extraordinary care, inspired by the powerful patient-physician connection at the heart of our concierge medicine model,” says Specialdocs CEO Terry Bauer.
“What I love most about practicing in the concierge model is having more time to listen to my patients and build strong, meaningful relationships,” affirms Dr. DuBose. “The current healthcare system in our country is broken. External forces continue to force physicians to move faster and faster during visits with our patients and it has become impossible not to worry about keeping up with your schedule each day. There have been countless times when I wished I had an hour set aside to hear a patient’s whole story. In my concierge practice, I have the ability to get my patients into the office quickly and also to spend as much time with them as they require.”
For patients age 50 and older, the concierge model creates an ideal environment for preventive care that can enable optimal quality of life, according to Dr. DuBose. “Poor health is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Much of the sickness and disability associated with chronic disease can be avoided through early detection and testing, healthy lifestyle habits and guidance from a physician who has cared for you over time – the cornerstones of my concierge practice. It is my mission to care for each of my patients in this way,” he says.
Licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina and Connecticut, Dr. DuBose is board-certified in family medicine and geriatric medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties. Additionally, he is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, the South Carolina Medical Association, and the American Medical Association.
