Is using eye drops every day bad for you?
First, eye doctors always welcome hydrating the eyes. However, eye doctors are also interested with any recent onset symptoms of irritation, redness or pain prompting a patient to consider an over the counter eye drop. So assuming drops are not being used to mask an underlying health problem, we welcome daily use of the correct type of drops. The correct type of drops are never drops that indicate they ‘get the red out’, as these can become both addictive and problematic with long term use. I personally recommend to my patients Refresh or Systane products up to four times per day. Any more than four times per day should most definitely prompt an eye evaluation to determine why a patient feels the need to exceed this dosing. If greater than four times per is indicated, it would often require a non-preserved formula. Refresh makes a great non-preserved formula, Refresh Plus. READ MORE
Why do my eyes hurt when I look to the side?
Yes. If pain with eye movement has just recently occurred, and is persistent particularly with any blurred vision, this would most definitely need to be evaluated for the potential presence of optic neuritis. Your eye doctor would evaluate your optic nerve with dilation, and complete an optic neuritis work up, possibly including an MRI. READ MORE
How do I know if my contacts are old?
Great question. Generally, any redness, pain or change in vision should immediately be evaluated by your eye doctor, regardless the age of the lens. In addition, wearing any contact lens beyond the FDA recommended guideline can have immediate risk and jeopardize long term eye health. The brain has been shown to often trigger symptoms of eye irritation well after the eye is actually stressed. Because of this symptom lag, an eye doctor will never recommend changing out a lens when it ‘feels’ like it needs changed. By the time the eye “feels’ like it’s time to change the contact, the patient is at risk for a number of problems, including contact lens intolerance, neovascularization, keratitis, and corneal ulceration, which can be sight threatening if a scar occurs within the line of vision. My advice is to strictly adhere to your doctors recommended wear schedule. Ideally, one way to mitigate many risks of overwear is to just switch to dailies, where the lens is replaced each day. This is a very healthy, very comfortable and now a very affordable modality of wear. In our practice, almost 70% of patients wear dailies as the costs are now comparable to monthlies and even cheaper than most 2 week lenses. READ MORE
