Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Mala Murthy Balakumar, who serves patients in New York.

Dr. Balakumar is a seasoned, fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon at Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York. She joined the Garden City practice after 7 years of private practice in New Rochelle, and after serving as the Division Chair of Colorectal Surgery at Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester.

The Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York provide comfortable, discreet, and private care from five locations throughout Long Island and Queens. Every member of the team is a respected leader in their field, and each is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. They provide a complete set of services related to colorectal health, including: colonoscopies, robotic surgery, hemorrhoid treatment, diverticulitis treatment, and colorectal cancer treatment.

Serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Balakumar’s hospital affiliations include: The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai South Nassau, NYU Langone Hospital — Long Island, St. Francis Hospital, and North Shore University Hospital.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), she is a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS) and the Vice Chair of the CME committee of ASCRS.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Balakumar graduated with her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1990. She completed her surgical internship and residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue & NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, and then went on to complete her fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Carle Foundation Hospital. She also completed a clinical fellowship in endorectal ultrasound and anorectal physiology/manometry at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

As a testament to her success, she is board-certified in colon & rectal surgery by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. It is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties that issues certificates for practitioners of colorectal surgery.

Furthermore, she is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Dedicated to promoting the understanding of colorectal issues and disease throughout the community, Dr. Balakumar remains very active in numerous programs and health events. She does frequent community outreach volunteer work in the Long Island area.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon.
