Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Nelson Kalil, who serves patients in Rockville, Maryland.

An excellent hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Kalil works with patients at his private practice in Rockville, Maryland. He specializes in lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, and MDS.

With over 25 years of clinical experience, he is also affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine (Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital), Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, and Holy Cross Hospital.

Regarding his educational background, Dr. Kalil earned his medical degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. After relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital. followed by a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at National Institutes of Health.

Licensed to practice medicine in Maryland and Washington D.C., the doctor is board-certified in medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Dr. Kalil is a proud member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has also contributed to numerous publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
