As the Director of the Phase I Program at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute and a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Virginia, Dr. Karim is at the forefront of personalized cancer therapy, particularly for patients with lung cancer.
Her clinical and research endeavors focus on Phase I clinical trials, where she utilizes innovative approaches to tailor therapies for patients. Dr. Karim serves as the Study Chair for the S1929 clinical trial at SWOG, which is dedicated to exploring personalized treatment options for patients with SLFN11 small cell lung cancer. Her commitment to advancing cancer care through research exemplifies her dedication to improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Karim earned her Medical Degree from the University of Cairo- Faculty of Medicine in 1993 and completed her training in internal medicine and medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Cairo. She further pursued her academic journey by obtaining a Master of Science Degree and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree – the latter of which she obtained through a channel program with the University of Washington.
Dr. Karim’s post-doctoral fellowship at MD Anderson in Cancer Prevention and subsequent research fellowship at the University of Washington laid the foundation for her distinguished career. After completing her residency in internal medicine at Fairview-Cleveland Clinic Hospitals in Ohio, she joined the University of Cincinnati as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. She later served as an Associate Professor until 2018.
From 2018 to 2022, Dr. Karim held the position of Professor of Medicine and Director of Thoracic Oncology at the Medical College of Georgia, where she led numerous clinical trials and translational research projects. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, reflecting her commitment to maintaining the highest standards in patient care.
