Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Derwin P. Gray Sr., who serves patients throughout the State of Virginia.

A Virginia-based obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Gray Sr. is affiliated with the Virginia Center for Women, serving patients at their offices in Chesapeake and Nags Head. His clinical interests include minimally invasive hysterectomy and vaginal reconstructive surgery. He performs advanced surgeries utilizing the da Vinci robot.

Graduating with his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Gray Sr. went on to further his training by completing a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Howard University Hospital in 1988.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

In his professional experience, he served as a member of the Board at the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) for 9 years. An Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at EVMS.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts).

Among his various accolades, Dr. Gray Sr. has been the recipient of the Patients' Choice Award (2018, 2016, 2012, 2011), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011), and Compassionate Doctor Award - 5 Year Honoree (2015). He has received the Sir William Osler Award for Excellence in teaching Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2016, 2017 and 2019. Recipient of the OB/GYN Chief Residents Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015 and 2019.

Happily married, he and his wife, Desiree, have three children.
