An educator, Dr. Menichella serves as an Associate Professor of Neurology and Pharmacology at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University.
Among the various institutions and centers that she is affiliated with include: Center for Diabetes and Metabolism, Les Turner ALS Center, and Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-Based Center.
Educated in Italy, Dr. Menichella graduated with her medical degree from the University of Milan Faculty of Medicine in 1994. She then relocated to the United States, performing her internship and residency in neurology at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Actively engaged in basic science and translational research, including NIH NeuroNext and EPPIC clinical trials, Dr. Menichella is the Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded laboratory that investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain and axonal degeneration in hereditary and acquired peripheral neuropathies with a particular focus on painful diabetic neuropathy. Towards designing more effective therapeutics, her laboratory takes advantage of an integrated approach combining pain behavioral tests, electrophysiology studies, in vitro and in vivo calcium imaging studies, confocal studies, chemogenetics, and single-cell RNA sequencing with conditional and transgenic mouse models.
More recently, Dr. Menichella’s laboratory has been validating therapeutic targets using human tissue including DRG and skin biopsy.
