Get to know General & Minimally Invasive Surgeon Dr. Michael T. Hernando, who serves patients in Morristown, New Jersey.

Dr. Hernando is the Managing Director of Morristown Surgical Associates – Atlantic Medical Group in Morristown, New Jersey. Atlantic Medical Group is a multispecialty physician group with more than 900 doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants at over 300 locations throughout northern and central New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania. Their mission is to design and deliver high quality, innovative and personalized health care, to build healthier communities and improve lives for patients, consumers, and caregivers.

Dr. Hernando is also the Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at Morristown Medical Center. Morristown Medical Center is a Magnet Hospital for Excellence in Nursing Service, the highest level of recognition achievable from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for facilities that provide acute care services.

Dr. Hernando is board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Hernando received his medical degree from Autonomous University of Guadalajara. He completed an internship at New York Medical College and his postgraduate residency training was performed at Morristown Medical Center, where he was awarded the Hughes Dougan Award for dedication to patient care and excellence in surgical technique. He was also twice awarded the Ames Filippone Chairman Award for the resident who best exemplifies the high ideals, compassion, care and style of leadership that characterize Dr. Filippone.

With more than 10 years of experience, Dr. Hernando is dedicated to all aspects of general surgery, including benign and malignant breast disease, as well as gastrointestinal disease including gallbladder, stomach, small intestine, colon, and appendix. He is expert at diagnosing and treating all types of hernias including hiatal, ventral, incisional, groin hernias, and complex abdominal wall hernias. Furthermore, he is a leader in the field of robotic surgery and is able to perform the most complex gastrointestinal and hernia surgeries robotically. He can perform single incision robotic surgery with virtually no scar.

Dr. Hernando’s passion is minimally invasive surgery, with dedication to his patients receiving the best results and the quickest recovery. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their five boys. He also enjoys physical fitness, tennis, golf, skiing, basketball and photography.

In addition to English, Dr. Hernando speaks Spanish and Filipino.
