Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Stephen Brown, who serves patients in Phoenix, Arizona.

A board-certified colorectal surgeon treating adults, Dr. Brown works at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix in Arizona. His care philosophy is: “a trusting relationship is the foundation of my practice.”

Among his academic appointments, he has been an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Arizona since 1999.

Graduating with his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1982, Dr. Brown went on to perform his internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Toledo Medical Center in 1983 and 1988, respectively. He then completed an additional residency in colon and rectal surgery at UMDNJ Affiliated Hospitals in 1989.

A year later, in 1990, he attained board certification in colon and rectal surgery through the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. The Board is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties that issues certificates for practitioners of colorectal surgery.

Attributing his success to a commitment to life-long learning, hard work, integrity, and faith-based values, Dr. Brown is an active member of the Arizona Medical Association , the American College of Surgeons (Fellow), the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (Fellow), and the Christian Medical and Dental Associations.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. The field is also known as proctology, but this term is now used infrequently within medicine and is most often employed to identify practices relating to the anus and rectum in particular. Colorectal surgeons specialize in the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of patients with colorectal disorders. They have comprehensive knowledge about general surgery and in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon.
