Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Tamara J. Merchant-McCambry, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Recognized as a prominent colorectal surgeon, Dr. Merchant-McCambry specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating the most common to the most complex in colorectal conditions and cancers. She offers preventive screenings, non-invasive treatments, and surgical procedures based on the needs of each patient at her private practice in San Antonio, Texas.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Merchant-McCambry started her career in medicine by earning her medical degree from the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 1999. She then went on to complete consecutive residencies in general surgery at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center and at Loyola University, before completing her fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. The field is also known as proctology, but this term is now used infrequently within medicine and is most often employed to identify practices relating to the anus and rectum in particular. A colorectal surgeon is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of anorectal and colorectal conditions (conditions of the colon, rectum, and anus).

With years of experience in her field, Dr. Merchant-McCambry has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2014) and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2016, 2014).
