The medical community is bidding farewell to Dr. James “JD” Wright, MD, a dedicated physician whose remarkable career spanned more than four decades. Known for his commitment to patient care, innovative practices, and leadership roles, Dr. Wright leaves behind a legacy that has significantly impacted the healthcare landscape in Joliet and Will County.
Dr. Wright’s academic journey began at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics in 1972. He then pursued a Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, graduating in 1976. His medical career commenced in 1980 with the Joliet Medical Group, where he practiced as a general internist until 1997. Driven by a desire to enhance patient care, Dr. Wright became the first hospitalist in Joliet and Will County, focusing on inpatient care and collaborating with community physicians to support their outpatient practices.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wright held various administrative positions, including Utilization Review physician at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center and President of the local county medical society in 1987. His leadership skills and passion for medicine propelled him to direct the hospitalist service as it expanded, ensuring quality care for countless patients.
In 2014, Dr. Wright retired from clinical practice, yet his commitment to the community did not wane. He took on the role of director at Joliet Area Community Hospice until 2018 and later served as the administrative medical director at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Center until his retirement in November 2020. Dr. Wright remains active in professional endeavors, serving on the boards of Lightways Hospice and Will Grundy Medical Clinic, as well as being an advisory board member for the Will County TB Clinic.
