Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Cynara L. Coomer, who serves patients in Staten Island, New York.

A top professional in the field of general surgery, Dr. Coomer is the Chief of Breast Surgery and Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Staten Island University Hospital, an affiliate of Northwell Health. She specializes in performing nipple-sparing and areola-sparing mastectomies with immediate reconstruction. She is also experienced in providing partial breast radiation.

With two campuses and 668 beds, Staten Island University Hospital is the borough’s major teaching hospital and one of the New York metropolitan area’s largest. As part of Northwell Health, they have access to the vast resources of New York’s largest health system, while remaining firmly entrenched and engaged in their local community.

A native of South Africa, Dr. Coomer completed her medical degree in 1996 at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Southern California. She fulfilled her surgical residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Medical Center.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor attained board-certification in general surgery through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

On a professional level, Dr. Coomer is an active member of a number of professional societies, including the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Metropolitan Breast Cancer group.

Among her other roles, she joined Fox News Channel as a medical contributor in May 2009. She provides expertise on a variety of topics in cancer research with a focus on women’s health. She also appears as a contributor on WNYW-FOX 5 News and as a medical reporter, host and blogger for FoxNewsHealth.com

Before coming to Staten Island University Hospital, Dr. Coomer was a breast surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. At both hospitals she established a clinical practice devoted to treating breast diseases of all kinds, both benign and malignant.

With a passion for teaching, she serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery specializing in breast health and breast cancer surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.

Throughout her acclaimed career, Dr. Coomer has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2017, 2008), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018, 2017, 2016).
