Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Fernando Ona, who serves patients in Honolulu, Hawaii.

An experienced gastroenterologist, Dr. Ona sees patients at Pediatric Medical Group LLC in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has expertise in dealing with conditions such as constipation, ulcerative colitis, IBS, celiac disease, acid reflux disease, and hemorrhoids, among others.

Licensed to practice medicine in Hawaii, he is affiliated with Tripler Army Medical Center, VA Pacific Islands Health Care System, Ka’u Hospital, Hilo Medical Center, and Hale Ho’ola Hamakua.

Academically, Dr. Ona earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in 1967. After relocating to the United States, he completed his internship at the Raritan Bay Medical Center, followed by two residencies in internal medicine at the VA Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center in 1971 and 1973, respectively. Finally, he went on to complete his fellowship in gastroenterology at the Boston University Medical Center.

A Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, the doctor is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.
