Get to know Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Atul Shah, who serves patients in Illinois.

Dr. Shah, a fellowship-trained interventional cardiologist, serves full-time at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, Illinois, which is a part of Prairie Cardiovascular. His outreach clinic is HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

“The foundational mission principles of Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) embody the belief that every life is a sacred gift and every human being is a unity of body, mind, and spirit. Our health care ministry calls upon us to foster healing, serve with compassion, and promote wellness for all persons, with special attention to our brothers and sisters who are poor, underserved, and most vulnerable” according to the mission statement on their website.

After earning his medical degree from B.J. Medical College in India, Dr. Shah relocated to the United States to pursue his training. He completed his internship at Worcester City Hospital, his residency in internal medicine at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center, and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American College of Physicians, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Interventional cardiology is the subspecialty of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment of heart diseases. The field includes the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, vascular disease, and acquired structural heart disease. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease, as well as congenital and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Shah is the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2017, 2018), On-Time Doctor Award (2018), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018).
