Dr. Genene Bekele, MD, FACE, is a highly respected double board-certified endocrinologist with a wealth of experience in the field. He practices at the Institute of Endocrinology – Diabetes, Health & Hormones and operates out of the Panama City Branch in Florida. 

Dr. Bekele’s journey in medicine began when he earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia in 1980. His passion for endocrinology led him to complete his internship and residency at the Addis Ababa University and the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Bekele further expanded his expertise through fellowships in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at prestigious institutions such as the McGill University in Montréal, Canada, and the Good Samaritan Medical Center/Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, with rotations at the Mayo Clinic,  Scottsdale, and the National Institute of Health (NIDDK, NIH), Phoenix, Arizona [Clinical and Research Fellow, and subsequently Staff Fellow/Clinical Associate for approximately 1-1/2 year at the NIDDK, NIH]. 

With a remarkable 40+ years of clinical experience, Dr. Bekele holds board certifications in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also recognized as a Fellow of The American College of Endocrinology (FACE),  highlighting his commitment to excellence in patient care and medical practice.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Bekele has made significant contributions to the medical field through teachings, academic research and publications in international journals. His dedication and expertise have been acknowledged with prestigious awards such as the Enol Littmann Scholarship, the 1997 Endocrine Society Travel Award, American Top Physician for several years in a row, Most Compassionate Doctor 2011/USA, Top Endocrinologist 2021 (Washington DC Magazine TOP DOCTORS – ENDOCRINOLOGIST), Best in Florida Magazine/Excellence in Endocrinology 2024, and others. 

Dr. Bekele’s impact extends beyond the medical realm, as he has actively participated in various humanitarian programs. From serving on the Executive Board of the African Aids Initiative,  International INC., to volunteering in leprosy rehabilitation programs, and others,  his commitment to improving global health outcomes is truly commendable.
