Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Michael Herion, who serves patients in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. Herion has been practicing comprehensive ophthalmology since 2003 and has particular interest in premium cataract and refractive surgery. He works alongside Dr. Matthew Hammond, MD, at Carrot LASIK & Eye Center in Mesa, Arizona.

Recognized as Arizona’s leader in laser vision corrective surgery, Carrot LASIK & Eye Center is one of the most technologically advanced ophthalmology clinics in the state. Drs. Herion and Hammond have been serving patients’ eyes for over 15 years, both starting with military backgrounds. They offer six modern vision correction procedures all designed around improving patients’ quality of life.

Dr. Herion is a Lt. Col. in the United States Air Force Reserve, representative of the desire to serve that motivated his choice to go into the field of eye medicine. During his service time, he received an Air Force Commendation Medal for his service in The Global War on Terror.

Furthering his studies, Dr. Herion attended Arizona State University for undergraduate studies before getting his medical degree from Saint George’s University School of Medicine. His residency in ophthalmology took place at Saint Louis University Hospital before he completed a retina fellowship with The Retina Group Ltd.

Offering unmatched patient care, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, retinal, and corneal surgery.

Outside of practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time outside, including skiing and scuba diving. On fall Saturdays, he can be found in the stands of Arizona State Sun Devils football games.
