Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Eugene G.C. Wong, who serves patients throughout the State of Hawaii.

As a nephrologist in Hawaii, Dr. Wong diagnoses, treats, and manages diseases and complications affecting the kidneys. He has been affiliated with Hawaii Pacific Health’s network of hospitals since 1989, holding privileges at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, and Straub Medical Center.

Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children is a nationally recognized, not-for-profit hospital and is widely known as Hawaii’s leader in the care of women, infants, and children. With more than 1,500 employees and 630 physicians, Kapiʻolani is fully accredited by The Joint Commission, an independent nonprofit organization that certifies health care organizations and programs in the United States.

Pali Momi Medical Center is a nonprofit hospital located in Waimalu, West Oʻahu. It has 118 beds, and has a full range of services, including an interventional cardiac catheterization lab, CT scan and MRI services, and the state’s first Retina Center. 

Straub Medical Center is a not-for-profit health care system with a 159-bed hospital in Honolulu, and a network of neighborhood clinics. With more than 400 employed or contracted physicians who are leaders in their fields, it provides its patients with expert diagnoses and treatments for more than 32 different medical specialties, including orthopedics, cardiac care, neurology, cancer, endocrinology/diabetes, family medicine, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, internal medicine, women’s health, vascular surgery, and urology.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1965. He then went on to perform his residencies in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine and UCLA Medical Center. This was followed by a fellowship in nephrology at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center.

Licensed to practice medicine in Hawaii, Dr. Wong is the Medical Director of Acute Hemodialysis Nephrology at The Queen’s Medical Center. It is the largest private non-profit hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii.

An authority in his field, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
